The EU Settlement Scheme is free and is open to EU citizens and their non-EU family members.  You should apply before 31 December 2020 as this is when your rights could change. You need to apply even if you have a Permanent Residence card, as your residence card will not be valid after 31 December 2020. You are also advised to apply if you have Indefinite Leave to Remain, as you’ll get a more secure status.

The council works in partnership with Citizens Advice Wandsworth to provide information and support to Wandsworth residents who are EU citizens.

Maria and Tony, who were originally from Portugal but have been in the UK for 60 years, received help from the service when they didn’t know where else to turn. “I went there because I didn’t know where to go. So I’ve got a British passport and I wanted to see if my husband was allowed to stay because we’ve been here for 60 years.

“I made an appointment and then I went with my husband and (the advisor) dealt with everything straight away and it was very nice and helpful.  The quicker you do it, the better it is for you.”

Leader of the council Ravi Govindia said: “We greatly value the contribution our residents who are EU citizens make to our community and I would encourage them to take advantage of the support available in Wandsworth to apply for settled status as soon as possible.”

To make a successful application you just need to prove your identity, prove that you live in the UK and declare any criminal convictions. Find out more at gov.uk/eu-settled-status.
