We are pleased to announce that the Waste and Recycling Centres, at Smugglers Way and Cringle Street, will reopen from Monday 11 May following the publication of revised government guidance.

However, this will not be a return to normal operations. In line with the guidance Western Riverside Waste Authority, the statutory body which runs both sites, have put in place several measures to ensure social distancing and the safety of people who use the centres:

Visiting the waste and recycling centres

  • You can only visit on certain days, based on your car registration number (see table below). This will be based on whether the second digit of your car registration number is ‘even’ or ‘odd’.
  • You can only drop off Green Garden Waste and bagged General Waste (the waste that you put in your Rubbish bin). No other waste or recycling will be accepted, so please don’t bring bulky and DIY waste.

You should also bear in mind the following,

  • You should only visit if you cannot store your waste without causing a risk of injury, health or harm.
  • If you are unwell with coronavirus, symptoms of the virus or are self-isolating you should stay at home.
  • Weekday opening times have changed (see table below).
  • Stay 2 metres away from other people.
  • We recommend that you wear gloves for your own protection.

Councillor Sutters, Cabinet Member for Community Services and Open Spaces said, “I’m delighted that the Waste and Recycling Centres are reopening and thank Western Riverside Waste Authority (WRWA) for the work they have done to make this happen.

“I’d also like to thank all our residents for their support and bearing with us. I appreciate all you have done to minimise your waste.

“I’m also pleased to say we will soon be making an announcement about restarting garden and bulky waste collections.

“Whilst the reopening of the Waste and Recycling Centres is clearly welcome news, please do take note of the restrictions in place. And as the centres may be really busy when they reopen, please only come if you need to for now’.

As was the case before the lockdown, Smugglers Way only accepts waste delivered in cars, vans and by pedestrians while Cringle Street only accepts waste delivered in vans. These sites do not accept commercial waste.
