New Covid cash fund for Wandsworth hospitality, hotels and leisure businesses
Published: Tuesday, December 22, 2020
A new grant scheme has opened for Wandsworth businesses hit by the effects of Covid-19.
The new scheme aims to support hospitality, hotels and leisure businesses that stayed open but have suffered financial hardship due to recent Tier 2 and Tier 3 restrictions. Eligible businesses must be registered for business rates.
Wandsworth Council is making available grants of up to £1,050 per 14 day period for those businesses that were not required to close but were financially impacted by Tier 2 and Tier 3 restrictions between 17 October and 4 November and then again following the end of the second national lockdown on 2 December.
The new Local Restrictions Support Grant (Open) Scheme is distributing £750,000 from the first tranche of government funding for Tier 2 before the second national lockdown and further cash grants will be launched over the next month for those businesses affected from 2 December.
So far during the pandemic, Wandsworth Council has issued £61.3m in cash grants to over 5,000 businesses and awarded an additional £68.7m in business rate reliefs.
Cllr Aled Richards-Jones, Cabinet Member for Economic Development, Skills and Employment said: "This scheme will allow much-needed funding to be distributed to those businesses struggling under the pressure that this pandemic is exerting on our local economy.
“Our local businesses have made a brilliant effort and gone the extra mile to become Covid-safe while they stay open, but restrictions often mean that trade is suffering. As soon as the money becomes available, we are targeting Wandsworth grants schemes at different sectors of our business community that need support.”
Cllr O’Broin, Wandsworth Council’s finance spokesman said: “I know timing is crucial for businesses who need assistance, so we are striving to do our best to provide meaningful support as well as signposting to other government financial help. We want to reassure them that we are getting the money out of the door as quickly as possible and urge eligible businesses to apply as soon as they can."
Businesses are only eligible if they were not legally required to close when London first moved into Tier 2 restrictions on 17 October and again following the end of the second national lockdown on the 2 December 2020, but they were still impacted financially.
The following types of business will be deemed eligible for the scheme:
- Restaurant, café, bar or pub
- cinema or live music venue
- assembly or leisure property - for example, a bingo hall, a sports club, a gym or spa
- hospitality property - for example, a hotel, a guest house or self-catering accommodation.
Grants will be calculated at a pro-rata amount depending on the length of time London was placed in either Tier 2 or Tier 3 restrictions. The grants will be awarded according to the level of business rates rateable value (RV) at the following 28-day rate:
- RV of exactly £51,000 or above, on the date when local restrictions started – award of £2,100
- RV of over £15,000 and less than £51,000, on the date when local restrictions started – award of £1,400
- RV of exactly £15,000 or under, on the date when local restrictions started – award of £934
It will be possible to make further grant awards from the Local Restrictions Support Grant (Open) Scheme within Tier 3, but only for businesses not legally forced to close. Those businesses forced to close will instead be eligible for the Local Restrictions Support Grant (Closed) scheme.
