Local people are being invited to help shape the strategy by taking part in an online consultation. Details will follow on other ways of getting involved as the project progresses throughout the year.

The strategy will look at how to make the time between 6pm and 6am the best experience possible for everyone living, working and visiting the borough.

And it will explore how opportunities for socialising, creativity and fun can be maximised and celebrated.

Areas covered will include:

  • Conditions for night workers
  • How to boost the night time economy to benefit local businesses
  • Developing the borough as a destination for arts and culture
  • Making the streets safer, including lighting, street design and transport at night.

Cabinet member for economic development, skills and employment Cllr Rhodri Morgan has joined council officers on one of their tours of the borough at night to see how different areas operate, what’s working and what may need changing.

He said: “We want to support our local businesses and arts organisations that operate at night – this will help keep the borough even more vibrant and prosperous and increase employment.

“At the same time we want to be sure that people can go to work or go out in our borough at night and feel safe as possible. That’s why we want to talk to as many people living, working in and visiting as we can before finalising our strategy.”

The first phase of consultation will be open until April 29. This will feed into a draft strategy in the summer, which will then go out to further consultation.
