The van will help move supplies from the Balham club to a warehouse in Croydon ready for their onward journey to Poland.

“I was pleased to help the Polish White Eagle club with their request for vans, and now I’m seeing what I can do to seek out some of the essential supplies for them,” said the mayor, Cllr Richard Field.

At his first visit last week, Cllr Field thanked volunteers for their efforts. The club has been at the centre of efforts to help the people of Ukraine, with local people, as well as people in the UK and internationally, donating a vast quantity of goods which have been sorted and transported by volunteers, with up to seven van loads going out each day.

The Mayor has also written to the Ukrainian ambassador to offer the people of Wandsworth’s support and admiration for Ukraine during the ongoing crisis.

“Priority items now are not so much clothing for all ages they have as much as they can physically handle at this time but medical supplies, bandages, bedding, blankets, food, and water,” the mayor told councillors at last night’s full meeting of Wandsworth Council. The town hall was illuminated yellow and blue during the meeting to show solidarity with the people of Ukraine.

“The purpose and urgency is to alleviate suffering and there is a constant updating and analysing of what is required on an ongoing basis,” Cllr Field added.

“The greatest help now is the organisation of fundraising and direct donations of funds to verified organisations that will use the funds received to provide assistance and ensure and effective operation in the long term. The Disaster Emergency Committee (DEC) have raised over £100 million to date and you can donate online at dec.org.uk.”
