Libraries stay open during lockdown
Published: Thursday, November 5, 2020
Wandsworth’s libraries will stay open during the lockdown, with residents able to reserve books online and pick them up from their local branch.
Opening times will be 10am to 2.30pm at each branch on its normal weekday and Saturday opening days.
People are also being encouraged to use the wide variety of digital library services, including eBooks, eAudio and music streaming.
Available services in libraries include
- Book return at the entrance to the building
- Library Takeaway. Items can be reserved online or call the branch and staff will leave your item ready to collect at the entrance to the building
- Pre-booked 30 minute computer sessions for access to public services. However staff will not be able to assist.
Browsing will not be allowed and the Heritage search room at Battersea Library will be closed to the public. Print newspapers and magazines and seating areas will not be available.
All room bookings, study spaces, events and programmes such as children’s story time sessions and book clubs remain suspended until further notice.
Strict hygiene and social distancing rules will be in place including limited entry depending on the size of each location - there will be a concierge at the door to manage visitor numbers – and time limits on library visits
Digital services include access to Libby, RBDigital, Freegal, PressReader, learning resources and the Ancestry site where families can research their history. Events, including children’s storytimes, poetry readings, songs and baby rhyme times, are being delivered via Facebook.

Cabinet member for community services and open spaces Cllr Steffi Sutters said: “We know lockdown is a difficult time for many people, so we were determined to continue to provide as many library services as we could. I’m pleased that libraries will remain open, and I’d like to thank library staff for all their efforts.
“I would also encourage people to take a look at the wide range of digital library services we offer. We are very proud of our comprehensive online library service and since the start of the first lockdown we have seen a huge rise in the number of people using it. You can browse the book collection, read e-books, listen to music, read magazines or newspapers, or even enjoy a story with your children – all from the comfort of your own home at a time of your choosing.”
The borough’s library service is delivered on behalf of Wandsworth Council by Better. To join complete the online form and then email the temporary code to firstname.lastname@example.org to receive a library card number
