Residents can voice support for 20mph limit on some local ‘B roads’

The council is set to ask local people whether or not they support the introduction of lower speed limits in some busy roads not currently included in the borough’s comprehensive list of streets with a 20mph limit.

Residents will soon be asked if they want to introduce a 20mph limit in some local ‘B roads’.

In 2017 almost all residential side streets in Wandsworth were included in a borough-wide 20mph zone.

But the zone did not include a number of local ‘B roads’ nor the main trunk roads that form part of Transport for London’s network of red routes.

Now the council is to shortly unveil a fresh consultation on adding the following ‘B roads’ to the borough-wide 20mph zone. They are Silverthorne Road, Northcote Road, Bolingbroke Grove, Bellevue Road and Rectory Lane.

In a previous consultation, carried out in 2016 which led to the implantation of the borough-wide 20mph zone, 64 per cent of residents were opposed to lowering the limit on main roads.

Now after receiving a number of petitions and having carried out further traffic studies, the council will be asking local people if they support reduced speed limits on these B-roads.

The council’s transport spokesman Cllr Paul Ellis said lowering the limits could deliver a range of benefits.

He said: “I support this change because lower speed limits mean safer streets and this can encourage other forms of sustainable transport like cycling and walking.

“Accidents involving collisions between pedestrians and vehicles are three times less likely to be fatal if the speed of the impact is 20mph compared to 30mph.

“Research has shown that at 30mph, 55 per cent of collisions result in pedestrian fatalities while at 20mph this figure drops dramatically to just 17 per cent.

“And it could have a beneficial effect on air quality too. A study by Imperial College found that diesel vehicles with engines of between 1.4l and 2.0l produce fewer harmful emissions at 20mph than at 30mph while smaller petrol and diesel engine vehicles both generate fewer particulates when driven at this lower speed, so this proposal has the potential to bolster our efforts at improving some aspects of local air quality.

“We have already introduced a 20mph limit in all our residential streets – now it’s time to look at whether we should extend those rules to these B roads too.”

The consultation will commence on November 4 and run until November 25.

Enforcement of speed limits is carried out by the Metropolitan Police, with the council working in support of their efforts. Any revenue generated by speed fines goes direct to HM Treasury not the town hall.
