Community, arts and culture in Nine Elms
Education
A new two-form entry primary school and nursery with community space is planned for Nine Elms, on the former South London Mail Centre site between Nine Elms Lane and Ponton Road, facing onto the new linear Nine Elms Park.
St Mary’s RC Primary School, St Joseph’s Street, was fully redeveloped and upgraded as part of the Battersea Exchange development. The new school building is arranged around a central courtyard and a series of terraced play spaces and high levels of daylight.

Health
New and improved health facilities are being provided in Nine Elms, including a new NHS health clinic providing a range of services as part of Battersea Power Station’s New Mansion Square development, off Sleaford Street. The new facilities ensure all local residents will have the health provision they need as the area continues to develop and the number of people living in the area grows.

Arts and culture
Brand new arts and cultural spaces are being created, including galleries, cinemas, community facilities and event spaces open to everyone. The vision is for a 24-hour creative district, where culture integrates with business and commerce. We are growing an existing vibrant arts scene connecting Royal College of Art in Battersea with the galleries cluster near Vauxhall.
Cultural ‘anchor tenants’ are supported in their move to allocated spaces in new developments in the Battersea and Nine Elms area where they will become embedded in community life offering leisure and job opportunities as well as training and workshop activities. Confirmed cultural anchor tenants include Matt’s Gallery, Chocolate Films, World Heart Beat music academy and Theatre 503.
Instrumental to the creation of a 24/7 central London neighbourhood is the establishment of a truly mixed-use district, where people work as well as live, meet, study, and enjoy leisure time.
