Council Tax bands and charges

Assessment delays

The Valuation Office Agency (VOA) is experiencing delays in assessments for new developments, banding changes and splitting and merging properties. We cannot follow up any assessments with the VOA on your behalf. Contact VOA.

The amount of Council Tax you pay depends on which band your property is in.

How your bill is calculated

Your Council Tax bill is made up of two charges:

  • The Wandsworth charge (including money set aside for Adult Social Care), set by us
  • The Greater London Authority (GLA) charge, set by the GLA

Properties in the Wimbledon and Putney Commons Conservators Levy pay an additional amount to fund the upkeep of the commons.

How your band is set

Bands are set by the Valuation Office Agency (VOA), not by us.

Every home is placed in one of eight Council Tax bands (A to H). Your band is based on what your property might have sold for in April 1991.

Any change in your home’s value caused by the housing market since 1991 will not affect your Council Tax band. Properties that did not exist or have been altered since 1 April 1991 are valued as though they existed on that date.

Challenge your band

You can challenge your Council Tax band if you think your property is in the wrong band.

You still need to pay your Council Tax at the current band rate while your appeal is being decided.
