Drinking and general water quality

Thames Water supplies drinking water in the borough. To ensure that the drinking water is safe, Thames Water carry out regular checks of water purity and monitoring. The results of this monitoring and other general information regarding water quality is available from Thames Water on 0800 316 9800.

Regulation of water

Although the primary responsibility for monitoring water quality rests with the water supplier, water quality data is also subject to external review. The water companies send detailed reports to the Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) and to local and health authorities.

Other agencies are also involved with monitoring water quality and the control of the water industry.

Private water supplies and distribution systems

A private water supply is a supply of water, which does not come from a licensed water supplier, such as Thames Water. Private supplies may come from a number of sources, including wells, boreholes, rivers and streams. We monitor private water supplies.

A private distribution system is where a water company supplies water to the boundary of a premises and the person responsible for the premises supplies it to the occupiers of other buildings on the same site.
