New safer short cuts for those travelling by bike

A series of contraflow schemes that provide safe and convenient two-way cycling along quieter one-way residential streets is supporting those travelling by bike.

Four new schemes have been delivered giving more options for people who travel by bike as well as those who would like to start doing so on quieter routes, as part of the council’s Future Streets strategy which aims to deliver cleaner and greener active travel opportunities across the borough.

The new schemes are in the following streets which are either wholly one-way or have short one-way sections – allowing those on bicycles to travel in both directions.

• Werter Road, Putney
• Brynmaer Road/Warriner Gardens, Battersea
• Lurline Gardens, Battersea
• Khama Road, Tooting

A series of measures have been introduced to enhance safety levels for all roads users and pedestrians including better signage and road markings and the introduction of double yellow lines on corners to improve visibility.

The schemes will be closely monitored over the coming months to ensure they remain safe for all road users and pedestrians.

Clare Fraser, Cabinet Member for Transport, said: “These contraflows are part of a wider package of measures designed to enable people to make a shift towards more sustainable modes of transport and reduce road danger.

“Introducing more direct routes for those who cycle on quieter roads is just one of the ways we are encouraging higher levels of bike travel across the borough.

“And encouraging people to get out of their cars and switch to riding a bike is one of the ways we can help meet our climate emergency targets and reduce carbon emissions.”
