Tooting Broadway ward by-election to be held early in the New Year

The by-election has been called following the resignation of Councillor Kate Forbes for work reasons and will be held on Thursday, 18 January 2024. 

Residents can choose to cast their vote in one of three ways – in person, by post or by proxy.

Voting in person at your designated polling station

Please note that when voting in person you are now required to show photographic ID under new Government rules.

Residents who don’t have suitable ID can apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate - but they must do so by 5pm on Wednesday, 10 January.

In the days leading up to the by-election, registered voters will be sent an official poll card with details of their designated polling station. If they wish to cast their vote they must do so at this named polling station and not at any other. And while there is no need to take the poll card with them to the polling station, it will be helpful to staff if they do.

Polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm on the day of the by-election - Thursday, 18 January. Voters are asked to attend in plenty of time and avoid a last-minute rush.

If you cannot go to the polling station in person, you can apply to vote by post or by proxy.

Voting By post

If you request a postal vote, your ballot papers will be sent to you ahead of polling day. People voting in this way are reminded they must complete the security declaration with a signature and date of birth.

Votes should be clearly marked on the ballot paper and returned so they arrive before 10pm on 18 January. Votes that are not returned ahead of this deadline will not be counted. 

Completed postal votes that have missed the post can also be taken (in the envelope provided) to any polling station in the ward on the day of the by-election between 7am and 10pm.

The deadline for new postal vote applications and for registering changes to existing postal or proxy votes is 5pm on Wednesday, 3 January.

Using a proxy

If you are not able to get to your polling station on the day you can ask someone you trust to be your proxy.
This means they can vote on your behalf in accordance with your wishes.  They will need to attend your designated polling station to do so.

The deadline for receiving new applications to vote by proxy (not postal proxy or emergency proxies) is 5pm on Wednesday, 10 January. The deadline for receiving emergency proxy applications is 5pm on Thursday, 18 January.
