Comprehensive road safety improvements approved for key Battersea travel corridor

Residents living in Battersea will soon benefit from safer streets after councillors backed a series of road safety proposals.

Councillors have approved a raft of road safety improvements following a detailed study of traffic and pedestrian conditions along the B305 road between Battersea Bridge Road and York Road.

The measures will provide safer crossing points for pedestrians and improve traffic flow along the B305 corridor.

The key measures will see new zebra crossings on Westbridge Road close to the junction of Granfield Street and Sunbury Lane and on Vicarage Crescent near existing bus stops.

A series of single yellow lines are to be upgraded to double yellows at key locations to improve sightlines and visibility, pedestrian accessibility and bus journey times.

In detail, the plans will deliver:

• A new zebra crossing between numbers 30 and 42 Vicarage Crescent to improve accessibility to local bus stops

• A new zebra crossing on Westbridge Road to provide a safer crossing point and support active travel for pupils of Westbridge Academy between Granfield Street and Sunbury Lane.

• Pavement and kerb improvement works at various locations to improve pedestrian journeys, especially for people with disabilities.

As well as the measures outlined above, the section between Lombard Road and York Road is set to get new signage, interactive speed indicator devices, fresh road markings and a new road surface.

Cabinet member for Transport Clare Fraser said: “This action plan will help improve road safety for residents, especially children attending Westbridge Academy and it helps support the ambitions of the Mayor of London in his Vision Zero Strategy.

“Improving road safety and encouraging more people to travel on foot, two wheels or by public transport are all integral parts of the council’s Future Streets strategy which has the goal of improving local air quality and helping deliver the borough’s carbon reduction commitments.”
