Dozens of pavements and road surfaces across Wandsworth are set to be upgraded over the coming year as part of the council’s Future Streets strategy.
Over the course of the next 12 months, the council’s highways team will be fixing roads and repairing pavements as part of a proposed £3.5m investment in ensuring a well-maintained public highway which provides benefits for mobility and access and provides safer travel choices.
The planned programme of upgrades includes repairs and renewals to pavements in 25 streets and carriageway resurfacing in 29 roads.
An additional 33 pavement renewal schemes and 30 more carriageway replacements have also been identified for upgrades if additional funding becomes available or the existing programme of works comes in under budget.
Councillors on the transport committee will be asked to endorse the programme of works at their meeting on February 1st.
A report to the committee states: “A well-maintained public highway provides benefits for mobility and access, promoting independence and wellbeing. Encouraging walking and cycling provides positive advantages to health and well-being and contributes to the Council’s healthy borough priority.”
Cabinet member for transport Clare Fraser said: “Keeping our pavements and road surfaces in good condition is a key responsibility and of real importance to our residents.
“Removing trip hazards, improving the streetscape and fixing potholes is especially important for pedestrians and cyclists and this planned programme of investment is a key element of our Future Streets strategy.
“Improving highways infrastructure and making it safer to travel on foot or by bike are major priorities for the council as we strive to improve air quality and meet our carbon reduction targets.”
