Changes to local bus services when Wandsworth Bridge closes next week for essential safety repairs

Ahead of next week’s closure of Wandsworth Bridge to vehicle traffic to allow essential safety repairs to take place, Transport for London has published information about changes to local bus routes that normally cross the bridge.

The repairs, which are needed to safeguard the long-term future of this key river crossing, mean it will close to all vehicle traffic at midnight (00.01hrs) on Monday, 24 July. The repairs are expected to take approximately 10 weeks to complete.

While these works are underway bus passengers are being advised that services which usually use Wandsworth Bridge will be diverted or stop short of their normal destinations.

• These buses will not cross the river: 28, C3 and 295.

• The quickest route across the river will be to walk across the bridge and pick up onward bus routes on the other side.

• Route N28 will divert via Battersea Bridge.

• Route 728 - An additional temporary bus route, 728, will run between Fulham Broadway and Wandsworth Town centre via Battersea Bridge every 20 minutes between 5am and midnight seven days a week.

While the repairs are being carried out to the bridge it will remain open for pedestrians and cyclists but due to the limited space that’s available, they will need to dismount and wheel their bikes across in order to ensure the safety of others.

Motorists are expected to use other river crossings, while some are likely to switch to public transport.

People who make only short journeys north and south of the river are being urged to take advantage of the Santander Cycle Hire Scheme and other bike rental schemes.
