Last few days of Wandsworth Heritage Festival

Highlights include

• A talk and book signing by Dr Velma McClymont, who grew up in Battersea.  Also known as author Kate Elizabeth Ernest, she has published four books for children, including Birds in the Wilderness (1995), which tells the story of the Windrush children. She will be in Battersea Library this evening (June 7) and booking is advised. Email heritage@gll.org
• A talk on Victorian Mentors: the Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability and its link with Charles Dickens, Florence Nightingale, and other celebrities of the nineteenth century Book a place
• A talk and exhibition from the University of Roehampton on Froebelian Heritage in Early Childhood Research. Book a place
• The unveiling of a new Wandsworth Green Plaque celebrating the Diederichs Duval family, who campaigned for universal suffrage. Booking not required. 
• An evening of music, dance and drama at the Black Heroes Foundation Soul Food Cafe. Book a place
• A walk by Summerstown 182 shining a light on the early residents of Keble Street, Tooting. Book a place
• A tour of the Fitzhugh Estate, built in the 1950s in the modernist style. Booking required. Email history@wandsworthcommon.org

The festival is organised by Wandsworth Libraries & Heritage Service alongside many local groups and societies.

Cllr Kemi Akinola, cabinet member for the voluntary sector, business engagement and culture, said: “This year we have extended the Wandsworth Heritage Festival to three weeks because so many people want to be part of it.

The festival comes together each year thanks to the local groups who help preserve and celebrate Wandsworth’s history. Their willingness to share their enthusiasm, knowledge, and is crucial and we hope you will support them by attending some of the great events they have planned.”
