The opening of the Apple Battersea store on 15 June comes just days after Wandsworth became the first London council to officially announce its bid for London Borough of Culture 2025.
'Potential for brilliant initiatives'
Councillor Simon Hogg said: “Already Apple has had a huge impact on our local area and communities. It was brilliant to take two primary schools to the Power Station recently to hear about the coding skills pupils have learned through the schools’ partnership with Apple. This new store opens up even more potential for brilliant initiatives with local communities.
“Our young people are bursting with talent. Wandsworth is already a borough full of culture and last Friday we were proud to officially launch our bid to be London’s Borough of Culture in 2025. I can’t wait to continue working with Apple and other local partners to bring positive change and opportunities to Wandsworth.”
The new Apple Battersea store, designed by Foster + Partners, is the company’s 40th UK store and the eighth in London. Local arts organisations including Battersea Arts Centre and World Heart Beat music academy helped mark the opening at Battersea Power Station.
Over the summer, the council will work with communities across Wandsworth to develop a London Borough of Culture proposal that builds on all the creativity and vibrancy that Wandsworth has to offer, from award-winning cultural organisations to heritage and grassroots community groups, freelance creatives and artists. The Mayor of London’s culture scheme provides the winning borough with funding towards a year-long programme which celebrates local culture and heritage and helps transform people's lives.
If named London Borough of Culture, the council will showcase the rich cultural heritage, diversity, and creative spirit of the whole of Wandsworth. The borough's unique identity will be celebrated with a lasting legacy for future generations.
