Councillor Kate Stock, Cabinet Member for Children, talks about the work we are doing, in partnership with the local NHS Mental Health Trust, to support young people’s mental health.

World Mental Health Day (10 October) highlights that good mental health is something that each and every one of us is entitled to. It is a universal human right, and as a council, we are determined to play our part.

Councillor Kate Stock, Cabinet Member for Children at Wandsworth Council said,

“Today we are focusing on what we are doing to help young people, making sure they get the right support, as quickly as possible, whether at school, in the community or through health care settings.

“World Mental Health Day is an important reminder of why we all need to prioritise our mental health and wellbeing and why we’re working hard with our partners to make mental healthcare as accessible as possible, each and every day.”

Our work at Southfields Academy highlights how the council is working in partnership with the local NHS Mental Health Trust to promote wellbeing and prevent mental health from deteriorating, intervening earlier when problems emerge.

The school has a team of professionals who can help promote good mental health and identify mental health problems earlier, offering a drop-in service or regular counselling, for example, as well as working closely with local mental health services.

This support has already been rolled out to half the schools in the borough and we will continue working with the NHS to ensure that all schools and young people across the whole of Wandsworth benefit from dedicated, an in-school mental health service.

“We are also rolling out initiatives like our new Family Hub pilot  at the Yvonne Carr Centre which opened recently,” said Councillor Stock.

“It’s designed to
create holistic family support under one roof, so families get the right help – including mental health support - at the earliest opportunity to improve the lives of children.”
