With over 35 free events and activities happening nearly every day during September there is a way for everyone to get involved with sustainable action in their community.

Sunday 1 September

Creation Care Sunday

A sermon on the subject of creation care from scripture repeated for a morning and evening service. For the morning service there will be children’s groups on the theme of creation care.

Hurlingham School's Costume Library

Opportunity for parents and children from Hurlingham School and other schools in the local area to drop off unwanted children's costumes (size aged 4-11). Monday to Friday, throughout the month of September and then on Monday 30 September they will be able to borrow other costumes for a specific time period. Costumes out on loan can then be returned on an agreed specified day.

Roehampton Community shed

The Roehampton Community Shed is a weekly group for men and women over 60 to meet and work on practical projects such as furniture upcycling and enjoy a cup of tea and a chat. You don't have to be an expert; you can pick up the skills you need and/or offer yours in a friendly environment.

Giant College Workshops

Join the Art of Cut and Paste for a fun and relaxing afternoon of collage-making. All collage materials will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own unwanted materials to contribute, such as old magazines, wrapping papers, buttons, plastic bottle tops, and any other materials that can be repurposed for our collages. The event is suitable for ages 18+.

Thursday 5 September

Bat walk

Join us for an evening bat walk to discover the nocturnal world of these fascinating creatures. Led by Enable’s biodiversity team, participants will learn about the different species of bats in our area, their habitats, and the crucial role they play in our ecosystem.

Participants should bring comfortable walking shoes, warm clothing, and a torch. The event is suitable for all ages. Participants under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult/guardian at all times during the walk.

This workshop focuses on the power of design and the ways in which thinking outside the box can help engage audiences to want to make a difference. Sophie specialises in visual storytelling and this workshop will take you through how to communicate effectively when designing.

Sophie will run through examples of how this is done, ending in a creative session where you can put these ideas into practise yourself.

Recycle More Southfields Weekly Collections of Hard to Recycle Items (Week 1 Items)

Recycle More Southfields weekly collections of hard to recycle items. These are free for the residents of the Southfields area. When you bring your hard to recycle items please walk or cycle.

Week 1 - Contact Lenses, pill packets, toothbrushes and pastes, other dental items (like dental floss packaging), bakery packaging, batteries, razors (please pack safely!), pens.

We collect each week from Wed till Sun. Only items listed in that week's list.
Please put each type of item into separates used bags, like bread bags, and empty all packaging!

Mega Skips Days

Mega Skip Days are an opportunity for people to dispose of bulky items for free. Large skips are placed in neighbourhoods around the borough for all local residents to use.

Mega Skip Days will be held from 9am until the skips are full or 12 noon (whichever comes first) on the following dates.

Fixing and mending party – Balham

Broken electrical or electronic items you don't want to throw away?
Sewing and mending that needs doing and you'd like a bit of advice?

Transition Town Tooting and Restarters Tooting and Balham are delighted to announce our next Fixing and Mending party - fun and free events where you learn how to fix and take back control of your electricals: Slow or damaged laptops, smartphones, radios, kettles and many of your other favourite devices can often be put right so “don’t despair, just repair”. Join with others and do your mending, sewing, knitting and crochet in company - with skills sharing if you'd like it.

Film screening of ‘Can I Live’

A screening of the film ‘Can I Live’, a powerful story addressing the climate crisis performed by Fehinti Balogun, incorporating spoken word, rap, music, theatre, animation and facts. Fehinti draws the connections with the environmental crisis and the struggle for social justice. The film will be followed by a time for discussion and food.

This event is particularly aimed at young people whose future will be massively impacted by the climate crisis, but older people warmly invited as well.

In this session, we’ll explore the role your pension, savings and investments have in supporting destructive industries such as mining, oil and gas. Many people don’t realise the role their money is playing in harming our planet - or how easy it is to change.

Help create a sanctuary for stag beetles by installing a loggery. This hands-on activity is perfect for families and nature enthusiasts who want to contribute to local biodiversity and learn about the life cycle of these insects.

Participants should bring sturdy footwear. The event is suitable for all ages, but children must be accompanied by an adult.

Southfields Harvest, SW18's favourite neighbourhood festival is celebrating Sustainable September. Network with your neighbours, connect with your community and discover what's happening on your doorstep, including: Mend, Fix & Repair cafe, Abundance Cider, allotment veg, Green The Grid, home produce, local apple juice, tea and cakes, sustainability themed art activity.

Southfields Repair Café

The September Repair Cafe will be at Southfields Harvest for this year’s Sustainable September. Bring your broken item (electrical /electronic, small household items, clothes, toys etc) and we will help you fix and learn skills for future use. If it can’t be mended, you’ll be given advice on what can be done.

You’ll be allocated a repairer who, with you watching, taking part and learning, will aim to repair it. We offer advice, enthusiasm and a collaborative skill sharing atmosphere with refreshments! Repairs are free but we ask for donations to cover costs.

Wandsworth Friends of the Earth Film Screening: 2040

Wandsworth Friends of the Earth are hosting a film screening of '2040'. 2040 follows Gameau's imagining of a future for his four-year-old daughter Velvet, where climate change has been solved. Described as “an exercise in fact-based dreaming” the film is structured as a letter to his daughter whereby Gameau travels around the world investigating numerous solutions that can contribute towards climate mitigation and imagining what a future would be like where they have been implemented at scale.

Circular Economy: Live sustainably, save money Webinar

This interactive online lunch-time session will offer the opportunity to learn more about ways to be more sustainable and save money.

It will signpost to initiatives that encourage repair/reuse, and reduction in the consumption of resources, as well as to related grant and skills development opportunities. Linked to the cost-of-living issues, it will focus on a range of issues, including food and energy consumption.

Moth trapping

Explore the diverse world of moths with this moth trapping event. Using special light traps, to attract and observe a variety of moth species, providing a unique opportunity to learn about these insects.

As well as network with other residents and businesses also passionate about sustainability.

Microgrant deadline

This year, we have our monthly climate action microgrant scheme that offers funding of between £100 and £500 to support community groups, individuals, non-profits, and schools to run events promoting positive behaviours around climate change and sustainability.
