Using sustainable and low carbon transport

Transport makes up approximately 21% of Wandsworth’s emissions, choosing more sustainable transport options can significantly reduce your emissions and help to improve the borough’s air quality.

Decarbonise your fleet with electric vehicles

Whether you’re upgrading your existing fleet or starting new, consider purchasing electric vans and heavy goods vehicles.

There are grant schemes available to help businesses transition to electric vehicles:

The government has also announced that drivers holding standard car driving licenses will continue to be allowed to drive electric goods vans at a higher weight limit of up to 4.25 tonnes, compared to the 3.5 tonne limit for diesel vans. This should make it easier for businesses to transition to electric goods vans.

Encourage employees to cycle

Bike2Work schemes can make cycling more accessible to employees.

Peddle My Wheels runs a try before you bike scheme which allows users to give a bike a go before deciding whether to buy it.

Purchasing electric vehicles through salary sacrifice

Electric vehicles can be offered through salary sacrifice schemes like the one at Octopus Energy.

Consider using e-cargo bikes for last mile deliveries

In 2023, we launched an e-cargo bike delivery scheme based in Wandsworth town centre.

A six-month trial scheme saw deliveries to local homes and businesses carried out by electrically-powered cargo bikes instead of petrol and diesel powered vehicles.

The new “micro-logistics hub” is based at the Southside Shopping Centre and will result in low emission “last mile” deliveries.

Parcels and packages will arrive at the hub inside a larger electric vehicle before being sorted into delivery routes and then distributed by e-cargo bikes across the surrounding area.

Consider using consolidation centres

Consolidation centres allow goods from different suppliers to be aggregated together onto the same vehicle for the final leg of delivery.

This can reduce congestion and reduce emissions as smaller vehicles can be used for the last leg of deliveries.

Measure your emissions

The Air Pollution Footprint Partnership gives businesses tools to estimate and report their emissions which is a starting point for businesses wanting to reduce their environmental impact.
