Improving biodiversity and green spaces

The UK is one of the world’s most nature depleted countries, its nature is only continuing to decline due to human activity and human-driven climate change. Biodiversity supports the functioning of a healthy ecosystem which is vital to support us.

Having a biodiverse environment and green spaces builds our resilience to the impacts of climate change. It is also important to recognise the intrinsic value of nature and our responsibility for its protection.

Keep your garden green

While paving over your garden or using astroturf may seem appealing for aesthetic and maintenance reasons, it increases the risk of flooding, especially in areas where flooding is already prevalent.

Join our Love to Garden campaign

Our Love to Garden campaign highlights the beautiful gardens we have in Wandsworth, both indoors and outdoors, and encourages residents to start their own gardens.

Maintaining and improving our green spaces helps with biodiversity, noise pollution, air pollution, and flooding.

Tree preservation orders (TPOs)

Some trees in the borough are protected by tree preservation orders (TPOs), which can cover anything from a single tree to entire woodlands.

It is an offence to cut down, top, lop, uproot, wilfully damage or wilfully destroy these trees without our permission.
