Enabling sustainable and low carbon transport

In the borough of Wandsworth 21% of emissions come directly from transport. To reduce these carbon emissions, we are working to promote sustainable and low carbon alternatives.

Supporting and promoting active and sustainable travel

To support active and sustainable travel we are:

  • Increasing the number of available cycle parking bays
  • Expanding The Our Bike community cargo bike scheme
  • Improving our walking and cycling routes

Improved cycling parking

To improve cycle parking throughout the borough we have increased the number of bike hangers to around 250.

Improved cycle routes

To encourage cycling and active travel within the borough we have improved the cycling and pedestrianised area on Old York Road.

We have also introduced new cycle lanes and road safety measures in Furzedown to improve safety for those who cycle. This pilot scheme followed requests from residents to improve safety on Mitcham Lane.

Increased number of EV charging points

To make life easier for our residents, we have increased the number of EV charging points throughout the borough. As of November 2023, there are a total of 1433 charging points.

Expanding our School Streets programme

We have expanded our School Streets programme throughout the borough to improve road safety, traffic congestion and air quality.

School Streets help reduce vehicular movements around schools at the beginning and end of the school day. The schemes help create a quieter and calmer experience for school children, pedestrians, and cyclists.

Over 50% of school in Wandsworth now have a School Street in place.

Embedding effective collaboration, communication and engagement on transport

To encourage collaboration, communication and engagement on transport we:

  • Host the Healthy Streets Forum with a wide range of partners to gather input on how we can make streets healthier for everyone
  • Regularly respond to consultations on changes to buses in the borough and push back on proposed cuts to public transport
  • Consistently advocating for bus electrification in the borough
  • Actively support many station improvement schemes across the borough

Promoting car clubs

To encourage sustainable transport, we promote and enable the use of car clubs as an alternative to private car ownership.

Car Clubs are membership schemes that offer people the use of a car on a pay-as-you-go basis. Car clubs offer a more sustainable alternative to private ownership by reducing the number of vehicles on the road, lowering emissions, and promoting shared use of resources.
