There are a series of elections being held on Thursday, 2 May. These include the London Mayoral and London Assembly elections - plus for Wandsworth residents who live in West Putney ward - there is a local council by-election.

If for some reason you cannot make it to your designated polling station on the day – you can arrange for a trusted friend or relative to vote on your behalf.

The deadline for nominating a proxy is two days from now – Wednesday, April 24. You have until 5pm that day to make the necessary arrangements.

To arrange for a proxy vote – please visit www.gov.uk/apply-proxy-vote

Both you and your proxy must be registered to vote and you will need:

•    your National Insurance number or any other identity document, for example a birth certificate
•    the address where your proxy is registered to vote
•    contact details for your proxy

You’ll also need to upload a photo of your handwritten signature in black ink on plain white paper.

If you cannot provide a signature or one that always looks the same, you may be able to apply for a proxy vote signature waiver.

If you cannot apply online, download and fill in a proxy voting application form and send it or bring it to the town hall before 5pm on April 24.

People can also read an online guide to applying for a proxy vote.

  • People who want to vote in person on 2 May but don’t possess photographic ID have until 5pm on Wednesday, April 24 to apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate.

The free certificate is available to those who don’t have photo ID – which is now a legal requirement for anyone wishing to vote in person at a polling station.

The council’s website has information about voter identification and the types of ID that are permitted.

To apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate please visit the Gov.uk website.
