Our London Borough of Culture celebrations came to the iconic Oxford v Cambridge Boat Race on Sunday with a display of silk flags welcoming visitors to the Putney Embankment.

Flying the Flag for the Boat Race was a joint project with Kenitika and Putney School of Art and Design, working with local community groups to create the 50 silk pennants.

Designs were inspired by the contrast between green and urban spaces along the River Thames from Roehampton to Nine Elms. The designs were drawn onto the silk with wax and painted with dyes.

The flags will be seen again at Urban Flow in September, which will be a spectacular procession through the streets of Roehampton, plus dance, martial arts and live soundscapes.

Deputy Council Leader Kemi Akinola said: “The flags looked great and we’d like to thank the Boat Race organisers for their support and of course a everyone who worked on a flag.

“We’d also like to give our volunteers a big thank you and we hope they enjoyed the opportunity to experience the race from a different point of view. There will be plenty more opportunities to volunteer at future London Borough of Culture events, so take a look at the website for details."

Find out about all events and projects this year and how you can get involved at the Welcome To Wandsworth website.

The first big London Borough of Culture event will be in Battersea Park on 26 April with the borough’s biggest ever dance event, Strictly Wandsworth hosted by Oli Mabuse.
