Thanks to residents' hard work and Wandsworth Council’s Cleaner Borough Plan, 5,000 tonnes of extra recycling has been collected, saving £1.2million to be reinvested for enhanced street cleansing.

Several measures are being rolled out to ensure high streets and local areas are well-maintained and tidy for residents, businesses, and visitors. These include:

  • Enhanced cleaning of busy town centres – We are picking up litter and emptying the bins in busy town centres in Balham, Tooting, Southfields, Putney, Clapham Junction and Battersea more often throughout the day. We will also jet wash pavements to tackle grime and improve the overall appearance of our high streets.
  • Fly-tip removal on private land – We know dumped waste is an eyesore, so in a new trial, as well as removing fly-tips on all Council land, we’ll be picking it up from private land too where it impacts the overall look and feel of an area. All to keep all our neighbourhoods looking tidy.
  • More Monitoring Officers – From May, we will deploy more Monitoring Officers to make sure strict waste and cleansing standards are being maintained. They will be assigned to specific locations so they can get to know these areas well and take swift action on any issues.
  • Alignment of collection and cleansing days – From May, rubbish collection and street cleansing schedules will now be better coordinated so that any residue or spillage is removed on the same day, improving overall cleanliness.

Judi Gasser, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “We know how important clean and tidy streets are to our residents and businesses. These measures are a major step forward in our commitment to creating a Cleaner Borough.

“By improving services, increasing monitoring, and tackling fly-tipping head-on, we are delivering real change for our communities. We want people to feel proud of their local streets, and we will continue working to make Wandsworth a cleaner, greener, and more welcoming place for everyone.”

An impressive 5,000 tonnes of extra recycling has been collected in less than a year thanks to residents’ hard work and Wandsworth Council’s Cleaner Borough Plan, equivalent to 400 double-decker buses.

As part of this plan, we have already guaranteed weekly rubbish and recycling collections, doubled Mega Skip Days, and given every household two free bulky waste collections, all while maintaining the lowest Council Tax in the country.
