Marline Anderson planted the sapling in the front garden of her home in Battersea, and it has since grown into a beloved local landmark, bearing fruit all year round.
When Marline passed away earlier this year, local residents started a campaign to have the tree protected in her memory.
Wandsworth Council has now made a Tree Preservation Order, which aims to protect trees which make a significant impact on their local surroundings. These might be specific trees or woodlands that are deemed important to the local environment, landscape, or public amenity.
Kemi Akinola, Deputy Leader of Wandsworth Council, said: “We were very pleased to grant the Tree Preservation Order and ensure that this beloved local landmark stands for generations to come. Marline was much-loved by her neighbours and we’re proud to have listened to the wishes of the community.
“In our year as London Borough of Culture, it’s great to recognise the contribution that people of African and Caribbean heritage have made to Wandsworth.”
Marline’s neighbours have also installed a plaque at the site to honour Marline, along with a quote from her which reads: "Kindly refrain from picking from the tree. You are welcome to gather what nature has let fall."
There will now be a 28-day consultation period during which objections or representations can be made. If confirmed the Tree Protection Order will become permanent.
