We are encouraging all eligible residents to find out more about the proposals and ensure their voices are heard in this vital decision about the future of their homes and neighbourhood.
We recognise the historical challenges faced by the Alton Estate and are committed to delivering improvements that benefit both current and future generations who make it their home. A revised and significantly enhanced masterplan is now nearing a decisive stage, which aims to address long-standing issues and provide high-quality, sustainable housing and community facilities including a new library.
'Transforming the estate for everyone'
Simon Hogg, Leader of Wandsworth Council said: “Our updated plans for the Alton are addressing the need for investment to create high-quality, well-maintained homes and facilities for generations to come. We’ve listened to what people have said and we’re confident that this next phase of the Alton Renewal Plan shows we’re committed to serving the real needs of residents.
“We now ask residents to review these new masterplan proposals and cast their vote in September – each and every vote counts and the decision will determine how we move forward with transforming the estate for everyone."
The revised proposed masterplan, recently published and approved by the Council's cabinet on 16 June, marks a significant step forward.
Key highlights of the new proposals include:
- Increased affordable homes: A core pillar of the revised plan is a substantial increase in genuinely affordable homes, addressing the critical housing needs of the borough and ensuring more Alton residents can remain within their community.
- Enhanced community facilities: The masterplan outlines improved and expanded community facilities, designed to foster an even stronger sense of belonging and provide vital resources for all residents, from new youth spaces to accessible community hubs.
- Modern replacement shopping parade: A brand-new shopping parade is proposed, offering modern retail spaces that will bring convenience and vibrancy back to the heart of the estate.
The resident ballot provides residents with the direct opportunity to shape the future of their homes and neighbourhood and will be open between 22 September and 16 October.
What is referred to as the ‘Landlord Offer’ will be delivered to all eligible residents in early September.

Benefits of the Alton Renewal Plan
The overall Alton Renewal Plan sets out how we are investing in the estate, working together with residents, community organisations, businesses and local stakeholders. The renewal plan builds on the insights and recommendations gathered during our long-term engagement with residents and the wider local community.
Since the plan was launched last July, immediate improvements have been made to the neighbourhood including:
- opening a Family Hub
- opening a dedicated community safety and police touchdown space
- putting in new litter bins
- resurfacing roads and improving pavements
- bringing Employ Wandsworth, our flagship jobs fair, to Roehampton
- increasing local bus services
- planning the revamp of play areas and community facilities.
