Phase one of four is complete

At the request of local businesses, and to minimise disruption during the festive season – a crucial trading period – we will pause work for a month from today, 9 December. The paving between Morie Street and Tonsley Hill has been completed (with the exception of the footway outside James Pendleton and Savesen Graham). Barriers will be removed for the duration of the pause, and winter planting is taking place to ensure a clean and attractive open space for Christmas shoppers.

Weather permitting, work will start again in the week commencing 6 January 2025, with additional staff on site to accelerate progress.

The improvement work aims to create a more vibrant, accessible, and welcoming space for residents, businesses, and visitors, which supports local trade and enhances the public realm. Through this work, the Council is encouraging walking and socialising in the public realm, maintaining resident car access as at present and formalising the previously temporary outdoor seating areas and street layout.

Signage, planning, seating and different paving styles will be used to help separate those enjoying the space on foot from those travelling through on bikes. The e-bike for hire operators have also recently introduced a ‘go-slow’ zone in Old York Road, which limits the speed of rented e-bikes.

Upcoming phases include:

  • Footway outside James Pendleton to Savesen Graham (January)
  • Carriageway outside Headmasters to James Pendleton (January to mid-March)
  • Outdoor seating area (Stylelounge to Antipodea, (January to late March)
  • Footway outside Stylelounge to Antipodea (late February to mid-April)
  • Footway outside Headmasters to James Pendleton (mid-March to mid-May)

The works at Tonsley Hill and Edgel Street junctions have been deferred to mid-May to make sure outdoor seating areas are available for Easter, supporting local cafes and restaurants during the busy holiday period.

Further updates on the installation of a second entrance to Wandsworth Town station will be provided later in 2025.

Residents and business owners are encouraged to share feedback as the work proceeds.
