The Council marked the global 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence with a series of impactful events. We are committed to ending Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) in our borough.

Events we arranged included White Ribbon stands at Putney Station, Southside Shopping Centre and Roehampton University, and a Walk to End VAWG starting from Clapham Junction, opened by Kate Stock, Cabinet Member for Children. We also organised a Hidden Abuses Conference, which brought over 100 professionals together for learning and networking.

We supported the SW15 Women’s Network in organising their annual White Ribbon march in Roehampton to commence the programme of events. White Ribbon is a charity working with young men and boys, to prevent and tackle gender-based violence. The march in Roehampton was attended by Graeme Henderson, Cabinet Member for Health, the Mayor of Wandsworth, Sana Jafri, and the Deputy Lieutenant, who all spoke at the event.

Councillor Henderson said: “It was moving to see our community come together during the White Ribbon march in Roehampton recently, to stand against violence against women. The annual 16 Days campaign highlights the urgent need for collective action, and we are committed to fostering a safer borough for everyone.”

Our initiatives against VAWG

We run events year-round to tackle VAWG in our borough, including weekly One Stop Shops offering free, discrete support for women suffering domestic abuse or violence, and the Safe Space initiative in Clapham Junction offers a refuge for anyone who is feeling unsafe at night.

Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) is a violation of human rights and a form of discrimination. Learn more about what VAWG is, including the UN definition, on our website.

16 Days of Activism runs annually from 25 November to 10 December and aligns with International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and Human Rights Day.

As a White Ribbon accredited organisation, we are dedicated to creating a safer community for all, as part of our Violence Against Women and Girls Strategy that launched in February 2024.
