Children attending two schools in the borough are set to benefit from safer journeys to and from the school gates under plans to install new zebra crossings.
Councillors are poised to approve plans to install the new zebra crossings when they meet on Monday.
The crossings would be installed in Putney Bridge Road and in Roehampton’s Alton Road, supporting children and their parents attending Hurlingham School and Heathmere School.
The Putney Bridge Road zebra would be sited near the junction with Wadham Road. The existing mini-roundabout adjacent to this location would be removed to improve safety and visibility on the approach to the crossing.
The Heathmere School crossing would be installed near Alton Road’s junction with Hyacinth Road.
Cabinet Member for Transport Jenny Yates said: “Making walking and cycling routes to and from schools safer for children and parents is a key priority for the council as part of our Future Streets strategy.
“We want to encourage more families on the school run to switch from using their cars to walking or cycling instead and making our streets safer for pedestrians and cyclists is central to that strategy.
“Having listened to parents and teachers and the wider community in and around these schools, we are now proposing zebra crossings close to the school gates.”
The plans will be discussed by councillors on the transport committee at their meeting on February 19.
