Jenny Yates, Cabinet Member for Transport, visited the station with Network Rail to see the latest progress as the works got under way with construction workers on-site.

The £20m upgrade programme, delivered by Network Rail and funded by Wandsworth Council and the Department for Transport’s Access for All scheme, includes opening up a brand-new second entrance at Odyssey Way and installing lifts to all platforms.

As part of the council’s Decade of Renewal, our contribution to the station improvements is paid for with funds the council has collected from property developers, at no cost to local taxpayers.

Committed to getting this done

Jenny Yates said: “Starting construction work at Wandsworth Town Station is a landmark moment for everyone who lives and works in the town centre. The local community has been waiting for a better, modern station, so together with Network Rail we’ve worked hard to green-light the project with a dedicated funding package and commitment to getting this done.”

Once completed in summer 2027, the station will be transformed for people with reduced mobility or pushchairs and those travelling with luggage, and have a modern second entrance with ticket turnstiles for residents living and working to the north of Wandsworth Town.

The station will remain open for passengers throughout the work with some platforms and routes temporarily closed for short periods during construction.

Victoria Greenwood, Senior Commercial Scheme Sponsor, on behalf of Network Rail and South Western Railway, said: “We are pleased to be starting work on transforming Wandsworth Town station and making it fully accessible as well as open up a second entrance. Our teams will be working throughout 2026 and into the summer of 2027 to build new lifts and create a second entrance to the station whilst keeping the station open and train services operating.

“These works will see some changes to train services at certain points throughout the project and we ask passengers to check the website and station signage frequently.  We would like to thank our customers and the Wandsworth residents in advance for their patience and understanding while we carry out these transformational upgrades to the station.”

Next steps

Preparatory works include the installation of hoardings and ducting ahead of the construction of a temporary scaffold bridge in April. Foundations for the new lifts will follow between May and November 2026, with the lift shafts scheduled for installation in February 2027.

More than 3.75 million passengers used Wandsworth Town Station between April 2024 and March 2025, making it the 15th busiest station on the South Western Railway network.

The upgrade will provide a station that is more fit for purpose as more new housing developments are planned for the area in future years.
