This call follows a rise in cases of measles in London, which the UKHSA has warned could lead to outbreaks in the Capital unless vaccination rates are increased.
Measles is a highly infectious disease that can lead to serious illness. One in five children with the disease are hospitalised, and on rare occasions, measles can be fatal.
The MMR vaccine remains the safest and most effective way to protect children against severe illness from measles. Children are routinely offered the first dose of the MMR vaccine at age one year, and the second dose at age eighteen months. Just two doses of the MMR vaccine give you and your family lifelong protection against catching measles.
The Council is appealing to parents to make sure that their children are up-to-date with their MMR vaccinations by checking their child’s Red Book or checking their GP record. If your child needs one or both MMR vaccines, you can book an appointment at your child’s GP surgery through the NHS App. You can also speak to your GP practice if you have any questions or concerns about the MMR vaccine.
It is never too late to catch up. The MMR vaccine is available free from the NHS whatever your age.
