The future is bright for a Wandsworth resident thanks to ongoing support from the Access for All scheme. Dedicated council gym sessions and physical activity helped her regain her mobility and confidence after fighting for her life in intensive care.

When Joan Aubee was lying in an intensive care hospital bed, all she could think of was trying to survive.

Spending seven weeks in intensive care at St George’s Hospital after contracting Covid-19, the former carer and college teacher’s life changed dramatically.

But from being unable to walk, the 62-year-old can now look forward to a healthier future after a series of dedicated gym sessions she was referred to by her doctor.

Joan has since kept up with the gym, and still attends regularly thanks to the discounted membership prices she receives through Wandsworth Council’s Access for All scheme.

Joan's story

The ambitious Access for All scheme aims to break down barriers and make sure all residents have an equal chance to access local opportunities, including sports, leisure and other essential services.

“The first time I came, I could hardly move,” explains Joan, who was active in her local community in Battersea before becoming ill.

“When I got Covid, I couldn’t walk any more, and I had to give up work. I was just fighting to live. That’s all I wanted to do. I couldn’t think of anything else except trying to live.”

Joan’s doctor referred her to Latchmere Leisure Centre, in Battersea, where she was supported by the team to become stronger and more mobile.

Residents have made more than 50,000 free bookings at Wandsworth Leisure Centres since the launch of Access for All, including more than 12,000 at Latchmere Leisure Centre.

“I was scared at first, but they showed me gentle exercises,” says Joan. “I was really stiff and I couldn’t use my legs, but I’ve got so much stronger.

“It was very draining at first because I felt like I couldn’t do any of it. Now any challenge they give me, I no longer say I can’t, I just get on with it.”

Joan has been heading to twice-weekly gym sessions for the past two years.

The team at the centre – which is run by Places Leisure for Wandsworth Council – have given Joan the support she needs to get moving again.

'Positive'

“I was like a recluse at first but the leisure centre team was always there for me,” adds Joan, who has also lost weight and improved her mental health through the gym sessions.

“I feel positive because they are very encouraging and they keep you going. It’s been a long journey but I’m getting there slowly.”

Wandsworth Council has ambitious plans to make sport and leisure affordable and accessible to all residents.

Access for All offers free off-peak gym access for adults and under 18s who meet the eligibility criteria. Off-peak times apply before 5.30pm on weekdays and all day at weekends.

Access for All ensures everyone has fair access to all council services and can enjoy everything Wandsworth has to offer – from gyms and swimming pools, to panto tickets and school uniforms.

We are constantly improving and expanding the Access for All scheme with a launch in March this year of more concessions and services, with further announcements coming soon.

“To have this scheme and have a gym like this is really good,” points out Joan. “You need to seize every opportunity and conquer your fears. If I can do it against the odds, then everyone can do it.”
