Private domestic gardens cover 716 hectares in Wandsworth - almost a fifth of the borough’s total area.
The council’s contractor Enable is asking residents to take the short online On Your Street survey. You will be asked to tell them about your garden – for example if it has a wildflower area, areas of long grass, a compost pile or a small pond – and what species you see there.
Biodiversity officers will work with Greenspace Information for Greater London CIC (GiGL) to analyse results. Insights will feed into the council’s Biodiversity Strategy which focuses on improving the quality of existing habitats, creating new ones and improving connections between them, expanding priority areas and engaging local people to support biodiversity.
Cabinet member for Environment Judi Gasser said: “Private gardens are a crucial habitat for wildlife, and we want to understand the role they play in biodiversity.
“Please take a few minutes to take the survey. The more data we collect, the more it will enhance our work to protect and enhance species and habitats.
