Beginning at 2pm, the procession is the culmination of a coming together of three major organisations - India’s Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts, UK arts charity Kinetika and Wandsworth’s own Tavaziva Dance. Urban Flow unites community performers from India and Wandsworth borough in this colourful celebration that will process through the streets displaying 100 colourful silk flags created in both India and the UK.
As the procession weaves through the streets, it will pause outside landmark heritage buildings to showcase captivating dance and martial arts displays, leading to a spectacular finale on Bull Green. The procession will move down key Roehampton routes including Holybourne Avenue, Danebury Avenue, Tangley Grove and Minstead Gardens.
The piece features a new score by acclaimed composer Rob Blake, who has composed for the likes of BMW, Red Bull, Puma, Arsenal FC and Citroen. Told in six parts, this original composition and the choreography follow the arc of a human journey: beginning with an intro, then moving through childhood, adolescence, chaos, transformation, and finally, triumph.
The collective of local performers includes these groups: Pointe Black, Hummingbird Blue, Roehampton University, UK Latin Group, Roots & More, and Ibstock School.
Justine Simons OBE, Deputy Mayor for Culture and the Creative Industries, said: “Roehampton’s streets will be filled with colour this September when Urban Flow lights up Wandsworth.
“The spectacular parade of silk flags will bring together local groups in a celebration of arts and diversity and be one of the highlights of Wandsworth’s year as the Mayor’s London Borough of Culture, as we build a better, more prosperous London for everyone."
Deputy Council Leader Kemi Akinola said: “Let the Roehampton streets be your stage at Urban Flow as we celebrate culture, community and connection in colour as part of our London Borough of Culture program. Professional artists and community performers in India and across Wandsworth have collaborated to develop this fantastic spectacle where rhythms will collide, making this an an unmissable event'”
Ali Pretty, Artistic Director and Founder at Kinetika said: “Urban Flow is a powerful expression of creativity, community, and cultural connection. It’s been an incredible journey working with our partners in India and Wandsworth to co-create a vibrant spectacle that reflects Roehampton’s unique spirit. Each of the 100 silks tells a story, shaped by the contributions of people across two continents. I'm proud that Kinetika could play a part in connecting these voices in what will be a joyful and moving celebration.”
Jayachandran Palazhy, Artistic Director at Attakalari Centre for Movement Arts added: "Working on Urban Flow with our dedicated team - Hema Bharathy Palani and Nithin Kannoth- and collaborating with Ali Pretty and her team and the team at Wandsworth Council, and many others has been enriching, inspiring and deeply meaningful as we explore urgent themes like environment, climate crisis, conflict, and inclusion.
Sharing skills, experiences, and dreams with the vibrant Wandsworth community has made this journey truly special - an uplifting and significant step toward imagining a more inclusive, sustainable future for all."
