The refurbished playground was opened at a ceremony this afternoon (2 July), providing modern, fun and inclusive equipment for children of all ages. At the ceremony, new wildflower boards were also unveiled to help people learn about the park’s flourishing wildflower meadow and the wildlife it supports, part of our commitment to making green spaces better for people, animals and nature.
We welcomed children from nearby Brandlehow Primary School, who enjoyed exploring the new playground, learning about biodiversity from our informative boards and looking for different species of insects in the meadow.
A new space to play and explore nature
Located just off Putney Bridge Road opposite the tennis courts, the upgraded playground has been designed with accessibility and inclusivity at its heart. It features modern, durable equipment that encourages imaginative play, climbing, swinging, and social interaction.
This sits at the heart of Wandsworth’s Year of Play and our ambition to create spaces that help children learn, grow and thrive, as well as bringing families together through joyful experiences. Our Year of Play will see more than 15 new or refurbished play spaces being delivered across the borough this year, alongside improvements to existing playgrounds and play spaces, ensuring all children can access high-quality play close to home.

The park’s new wildflower meadow boards
The newly installed wildflower meadow interpretation boards invite people to discover the wildlife now thriving in Wandsworth Park. The boards highlight how the meadow supports pollinators like bees and butterflies and showcase species to spot, including the small skipper butterfly, thick-legged flower beetle, and common pipistrelle bat.
The wildflower meadow was created using sustainable techniques, including mowing with Shire horses to protect soil health and reduce emissions. It forms part of our wider Biodiversity Strategy, which is focused on boosting habitats, tackling climate change, and connecting residents to nature.
Paul White, Cabinet Member for Environment, said:
“We’re delighted to open this wonderful new playground for children and to celebrate the thriving wildflower meadow. This is a fantastic example of how we are investing in our parks to create places where people can play, move and connect with nature. Projects like this are so important because they help tackle the climate emergency while making our parks even more enjoyable for everyone. Whether you’re here to play, picnic or watch the wildlife, there’s something for everyone.”

Supporting a greener, more active borough
The creation of the wildflower meadow and the new playground supports Wandsworth Council’s broader goals for a healthier, more active and connected community. Alongside the Wandsworth Moves Together campaign, which encourages residents of all ages to enjoy being more active, the Year of Play celebrates the power of play to bring people together, improve wellbeing, and create inclusive, thriving communities.
This project is part of Wandsworth’s commitment to protecting biodiversity, tackling climate change and ensuring all residents can enjoy high-quality, welcoming green spaces.
