The finishing touches have been made to Northcote Library and community hall, and it has been officially opened at an event this week by the Deputy Mayor, councillors and special guests.
Northcote Library has been open to the public since April 2023, but as part of the council’s commitment to investing in local spaces, a new community space has been recently completed alongside the library. This ensures residents have another space to hire for community groups, local businesses and residents, with brand new facilities.
The library itself includes the important energy saving measures that will drastically reduce its carbon footprint, helping Wandsworth become a more sustainable borough and meet its net-zero by 2043 target.
It has a beautiful woodland themed children’s area with family toilet and baby change, and there are books, computers and tablets for public use across three floors, public wi-fi, meeting rooms for hire, popular study spaces and pods for private meetings.
The added facilities offered at libraries around the borough, including the one opened this week at Northcote, show that these popular community spaces have something available to everyone. It provides people with different needs and interests, from all backgrounds and ages, a free space to visit in their local area.
Judi Gasser, Wandsworth’s Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “This amazing new space adds to what’s on offer for the residents local to Northcote Library.
“It’s fantastic to see just how many different things are available at these free facilities for everyone. I’m so proud that we as a council are continuing to invest in our libraries that really do sit at the heart of communities right around Wandsworth, especially at a time when so many other libraries around London and in fact the country, are closing their doors.
“Having sustainable spaces like this, that offer a warm, free, safe space for people from all backgrounds is crucial to ensuring everyone feels like they have somewhere to go. Libraries bring people together and are important assets in helping Wandsworth become a more compassionate borough.”
