At yesterday’s Cabinet Meeting on 3 March, which you can watch here, we agreed:
Council Tax freeze
The Cabinet recommended a Council Tax freeze for the third year in a row. This means that residents will continue to pay the lowest Council Tax in the country.
Sound financial management is at the heart of everything we do. Wandsworth has one of the lowest levels of debt and some of the highest financial reserves in London, allowing us to freeze the main element of Council Tax and invest in what matters most to residents, cleaner streets, safer neighbourhoods and a stronger community.
Looking after our most vulnerable residents is crucial. We will continue to provide excellent care for our older residents and support the NHS. A recommended increase of two per cent in the adult social care precept this year will help fund this vital work.
Investing in safer and greener streets
The Cabinet approved a Walking and Cycling Strategy Update, reaffirming its commitment to making Wandsworth a safer and healthier place for pedestrians and cyclists. This investment is being shared between a selection of schemes that will facilitate and promote active travel, including: the largest bike hangar programme in any local authority area, improvements to Old York Road and additional funding for pedestrian crossings.
As part of our Decade of Renewal, we are doubling investment in our roads and pavements. This record investment will improve road conditions, making it safer to walk, wheel and cycle in Wandsworth.
Jenny Yates, Cabinet Member for Transport, said: “The improvements we’ve agreed demonstrates our commitment to improving the borough’s infrastructure and ensuring safer journeys for everyone, something we know resident’s want to see.”
Strengthening community safety
Wandsworth is proud to be the safest inner-London borough. The Cabinet has agreed the CCTV Strategy for 2024–2029 which sets out how we will use our network of CCTV cameras, one of the largest and most comprehensive in London, to reduce crime and helps residents feel safer in their neighbourhoods.
Graeme Henderson, Cabinet Member for Health & Community Safety, said: “Residents have told us they want safer streets, and we are listening. By expanding our CCTV network, we’re giving communities greater peace of mind and ensuring our public spaces remain safe for everyone."
