SGN to begin major gas pipe upgrade on Buckhold Road

Published: Friday, May 9, 2025

Essential gas works by SGN will begin on Buckhold Road from 12 May and continue in phases over the next year and a half, with a break during the winter. The work is not being carried out by the council, but we are using every power available to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum.

Jenny Yates, Cabinet Member for Transport, said: “We know how frustrating utility roadworks can be – especially on a major route like Buckhold Road. This is not council work, but we are doing everything we can to hold SGN to account and ensure that disruption is kept to the absolute legal minimum.”

What the council is doing to help:

The council cannot stop essential utility works and these must take place to keep people safe and services working.  We do have powers to enforce safe and efficient working practices by utility companies and will be:

  • Monitoring the road network and providing real-time feedback to SGN.
  • Requiring that traffic management zones remain within legally defined safe limits.
  • Working with TfL and other utility companies to prevent overlapping works.
  • Imposing fines for unsafe working or if the works overrun their agreed schedule.
  • We will also be in regular contact with SGN to share feedback from residents and keep pressure on to reduce delays where possible.

What is SGN doing?

SGN is replacing ageing gas mains with new plastic pipes to ensure a continued safe and reliable supply for residents and businesses. The work will be carried out in stages by SGN’s contractor, Forefront Utilities, with each phase involving traffic restrictions, including road closures, temporary traffic lights, and bus diversions.

The first phase begins on 12 May and will involve temporary traffic lights between Neville Gill Close and number 55 Buckhold Road. Further phases will continue until autumn 2025, including a full road closure later in the summer between Wandsworth High Street and Southside shopping centre, opposite Hardwicks Square. SGN has agreed to pause work during the Wimbledon Tennis tournament to minimise disruption at that time.

You can find details of each phase of the works, the specific traffic arrangements, and a map of the diversion routes on SGN’s website.

What to expect:

Residents and businesses on Buckhold Road should prepare for delays, changes to access and road layouts, and temporary suspensions of bus services in some locations. SGN has committed to maintaining access to properties at all times and will be working extended hours and weekends where needed to complete the job as quickly and safely as possible.

Please allow extra time for your journey if you use Buckhold Road, check local bus routes for diversions, and contact SGN directly with any concerns or questions about access or the timeline.
