Have your say on proposed changes to second home and empty property council tax rates

We are asking residents to let us know their views on proposed changes to upcoming long-term empty and second home council tax rates, which will be increased and introduced from 1 April 2025.

Empty and second homes impact local communities and reduce the number of houses for Wandsworth residents and families. Wandsworth Council is standing up for local people by ensuring houses are used as homes rather than sit empty.
Additional income collected will be used to fund essential Council services.
Proposed new premium charges:
- From 1 April 2025, if a property is unoccupied and unfurnished for more than one year rather than after two years the property's council tax will double
- From 1 April 2025, properties that are considered second homes will be charged double the current council tax rate
Have your say
We want to hear from residents, businesses and stakeholders about the proposed exceptions to these council tax increases. We would like to know in what circumstances, and for what length of time, you think there should be exceptions to this new tax rate. Your feedback will help shape the final policy.
The consultation closes on Monday 23 December 2024.
