The 100m-long route is considered by local residents and communities to be a gloomy and unwelcoming space, so we’ve shortlisted seven artistic designs to improve the public experience and feelings of safety alongside upgrades to the road and pedestrian area.

Councillor Simon Hogg, Leader of Wandsworth Council said: “Improvements to this bridge are long overdue so I’m delighted we can finally give it some attention with a bright makeover.

“As part of our decade of renewal, these works will be paid for by property developers, helping to make this critical route better and safer for everyone. Take a look at the shortlisted designs and tell us which ones you prefer to brighten up your neighbourhood.”

The designs are also on display from 13 to 24 November at:

  • Battersea Library, Lavender Hill, during opening hours (closed Thursday)
  • Falcon Glade outdoor green space, next to Falcon Terrace and Falcon Road bridge
  • Outside Clapham Junction station’s Grant Road entrance

Rosa Rogina, Director, London Festival of Architecture said: “We’re thrilled to showcase the exceptional creativity and innovation behind these shortlisted designs, which represent a bold vision for Falcon Road Bridge. Each proposal reflects a deep understanding of the bridge's potential to connect and uplift communities in Wandsworth. This exhibition is a celebration of how thoughtful design can reimagine infrastructure to enhance daily life, inviting Londoners to engage with a vital project that will transform how people experience this area of our city.”

About the shortlist

From more than 80 expressions of interest from architects, landscape architects, designers and artists, seven professional design teams have been shortlisted to submit innovative and creative design ideas.

Applicants were encouraged to team up with smaller studios or other creatives for this project and use a co-design and community-engaged approach within their proposals.

The competition gives design teams the opportunity to create large-scale artistic interventions that address the bridge’s challenges while celebrating the vibrant character, diverse communities and rich heritage, particularly enhancing the area around Clapham Junction station.

Selecting the winning design concept

This exhibition showcases the seven shortlisted concepts in the final stage of the competition.

An expert panel of judges will select the winning design to be installed in 2025 during Wandsworth’s year as the Mayor of London’s London Borough of Culture.

When making their decision, the judging panel will take into account what you like or don’t like about the designs.

What happens next

  • The winning design team will be announced in December 2024.
  • Once appointed, the winning team will continue to develop their designs with local residents.
  • The final design will be installed at the bridge in late 2025. We're working with local partners to deliver the project.
