To celebrate the opening of the MUGA in Patmore Street, a community event was held featuring a variety of activities which included face painting, arts and crafts, and basketball sessions run by a local coach from London Mambas Elite Basketball and football sessions led by community group FAST. The event celebrated not just the transformation of a physical space, but the potential it holds for community development, youth engagement, and long-term skills and employment pathways.
Aydin Dikerdem, Cabinet Member for Housing, said:
“This new games area has been shaped by resident feedback and is a fantastic example of what can be achieved when we listen to our communities and work together to deliver real, lasting change. Our council home building programme is about investing in neighbourhoods and creating amenity space as well as much needed council homes. We’re proud to see Patmore Estate leading the way in showing how thoughtful investment in public spaces can unlock potential in our young people and strengthen the fabric of our community.”
For many young people, sport is a gateway to wider life skills, confidence, and even careers. One local resident, who began playing basketball on the estate’s original court, has since gone on to develop leadership, teamwork, and communication skills that have opened doors to employment and mentoring roles.
The investment in the MUGA and play area reflects a broader commitment to creating environments where young people can thrive as part of our Homes for Wandsworth programme. The Homes for Wandsworth programme is one of the most ambitious council home building programmes in London.
We know that a good home is the foundation for a good life. Every council home built is a family off waiting lists and into secure and comfortable tenancies.
This new space complements Wandsworth’s Year of Play, a year-long programme designed to make the borough the best place for children to grow, explore and enjoy the freedom of play. The Year of Play is guided by the council’s Play Strategy and aims to create inclusive, high-quality play opportunities in every neighbourhood, ensuring all children can enjoy enriching experiences close to home.
