And as part of the council’s Access for All scheme eligible adults and children will be able to get free and discounted play.
Padel is one of Europe’s fastest growing grassroots sports. It is played with bats and is a bit like a mixture of tennis and squash.
The courts were launched at an open day on Saturday where local people were able to try the sport for free. The council’s Cabinet Member for Environment Judi Gasser cut the ribbon opening the courts to the public.
Councillor Gasser said: “These courts will give people a chance to try out this exciting sport, have fun and get fit and healthy. We’re also delighted that it is part of our Access for All scheme, which is all about making sure everyone can enjoy the opportunities Wandsworth has to offer.”
The courts have been built and will be managed by All Star Tennis, who are contracted by the council to run the borough’s tennis facilities. Ben White, Co-founder of All Star Tennis said: “We are delighted to continue our longstanding partnership with Wandsworth Council to bring Padel courts to King George's Park. These new courts reflect our All-Star core values: fun, inclusive, people-focused, professional and our continued commitment to make community sport better, in line with Wandsworth Council’s ambitions, and we look forward to welcoming everyone to enjoy both the Padel and tennis courts”
Eligible adults including refugees, asylum seekers and people on a wide range of benefits, will be able to play for free every day between 1pm and 3pm. They will also be able to join as a concession Member Plus to get further benefits and a discount at other times.
There will be free access for local schools, funded places for eligible children on free school meals and free play for children under 18 between 3pm and 5pm on weekdays, plus weekly women-only discounted session and a weekly safe and inclusive LGBTQ session.
