Our locally listed buildings, parks and gardens

The Council holds a list of buildings that are of architectural or historical interest at a local level.

These are not subject to the same controls as statutory listed buildings that are listed by the Government, but their significance is nonetheless a material consideration in the planning process.

As part of the preparation of the Historic Environment Supplementary Planning Document (SPD), adopted in November 2016, the Council consulted on the selection criteria for local listing.

The SPD sets out guidance on protecting, managing and celebrating Wandsworth's built and natural heritage. A review of local listing was carried out in 2017. The original local list, which contained around 500 entries, dated from 1983 and was reviewed in 2017 in collaboration with local amenity societies.

The review followed the guidance set out by Historic England. Local listings are Non-designated heritage assets and are defined as ‘buildings, monuments, sites, places, areas or landscapes identified by local planning authorities as having a degree of significance meriting consideration in planning decisions, but which are not formally designated’.

A candidate list of nominations which can be viewed on the web link below was evaluated by a Heritage Judging Panel and a final list agreed by the Council’s former Community Services Overview and Scrutiny Committee.

The final list now includes historic parks and gardens, artefacts as well as buildings and has now been incorporated into the revised Local List.
