Our transport policy

Transport is one of the most important parts of day-to-day life in the borough. We use transport every day to go to work, school, visit the shops and friends, and to access services. Whether we make journeys by car, tube, train, bus, motorcycle, on foot or by bicycle, we rely on the transport system being safe, reliable, convenient and affordable. The relative attractiveness of different modes of transport influences our choice of travel.

A good quality transport system is also necessary to support the efficient carrying out of business in the borough and reliable, cost-effective deliveries and servicing of property. Making our transport system better will help our borough maintain and improve its position as a good place to live, work and do business.

Local Implementation Plan (LIP)

Our transport plan for the borough is known as the Local Implementation Plan (LIP).

Our Third Local Implementation Plan was produced following consultation in late 2018/early 2019 and was approved by the Mayor of London in April 2019. The plan sets out how we propose to implement the Mayor of London's Transport Strategy. The LIP is accompanied by an Equalities Impact Assessment and a Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA).

The council is allocated funding for LIP proposals by Transport for London. Reports about LIP and LIP funding are taken to the Strategic Planning and Transportation Overview and Scrutiny Committee. Walking and Cycling Strategy

A Walking and Cycling Strategy has been developed for the borough following consultation in 2021 and 2022.

The strategy presents a vision for the borough between 2022 and 2030 and details a series of actions and targets we will lead on to reach the broader sustainability targets committed to in the Local Implementation Plan (LIP) and Wandsworth Environment and Sustainability Strategy (WESS).

Local Plan

Our planning policies aim to protect and enhance quality of life and improve economic and social opportunities. They are the basis for promoting and managing development in the borough.

Wandsworth Healthy Streets Forum

The Wandsworth Healthy Streets Forum comprises council officers and representatives of organisations in the borough that contribute to the health of the borough’s streets. The forum meets quarterly and is a space to enable a full and regular discussion on all matters relating to the council’s desire to ensure that our streets are safe and attractive places to live, do business in and to travel through.
