Rubbish and recycling collections for places of worship
We can provide rubbish, recycling and food waste collections to places of worship in Wandsworth.
Collections we offer
We offer weekly collections for:
- Rubbish
- Mixed recycling - including paper and card, glass, cans, plastic, cartons
- Food waste
If places of worship want their rubbish collected, we must also collect their mixed recycling.
Collection charges
If your place of worship is exempted from local non-domestic rating under the Local Government Finance Act 1988, there is no charge for rubbish, mixed recycling or food waste collections.
This covers most churches, mosques and synagogues.
Chargeable waste
Collection charges do apply to certain types of waste, including bulky items and garden waste in excess of five sacks per week.
To avoid collection charges, any non-chargeable waste must be kept separate from chargeable waste.
Church halls
We do charge for collecting rubbish, mixed recycling or food waste from church halls if they form part of a separate premise, unless they are used wholly or mainly for public meetings.
Getting your bins
If we provide collections, your place of worship will need to hire bins from us or buy their own.
Hire our bins
We can provide bins on an annual hire agreement and charges apply. A site visit may be required.
Check our bin hire guidance and charges.
Buy your own bins
Alternatively, places of worship can buy their own suitable bins.
Check our guidance on buying your own bins.

Simpler Recycling legislation
This legislation aims to standardise recycling across England. It introduces a set range of materials that all workplaces, including places of worship, need to recycle.
Businesses with more than 10 full-time equivalent staff should have been following the legislation since 31 March 2025.
