Apply for home to school travel assistance

It is the legal responsibility of the parents/guardians to ensure that children attend school. TfL provides free or discounted travel to children up to the age of 18, so this means there is no cost to them or their parents. It is important to note that currently travel for 11 to 17 year olds is under review due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and so there may be changes to free bus and tram travel in the near future.

As the Local Authority, we encourage the development of independence and where possible we recommend pupils walk or cycle to school. However, as per our home to school travel policy and in order to discharge our legal duty, pupils aged under 16 who, in the judgement of the Director of Children's Services, have an unreasonable journey to school using bus or tram services, may be entitled to assistance with the cost of rail and/or underground travel to and from school.
