End your council tenancy

End your tenancy at any time by giving us 28 days written notice. The end date must be a Monday. If you are joint tenants, one tenant can end the tenancy by giving us notice in the same way.

Moving out

When you move out of the property, you must leave your property clear of rubbish and belongings, in a good state of repair and clean. If you leave anything behind we will remove it and you will be charged for the costs of removal and/or storage.

You will also have to pay for any repairs or other works that we have to carry out at the end of your tenancy, which were your responsibility or were caused by a breach of your tenancy conditions.

You must return all keys, fobs, entry-call keys and parking permits to your housing office when you move out of the property. If you do not do this, we will charge you additional rent and/or change the locks at your expense.

If you are also ending your garage/storeshed tenancy, you must clear it of all contents before leaving. You must remove all your belongings and any rubbish.

Resident Reward Scheme

In certain circumstances you may be eligible to be considered for a reward of up to £500 at the end of your tenancy. If you have been a tenant for less than 5 years you will only be considered for a maximum of £250. This reward will be based on how the tenancy is ended, the condition you leave the property in, the conduct of your tenancy and whether you owe any money to the council.

Deductions will be made where money is owed, for rent or council tax arrears or rechargeable repairs.  No reward will be paid where the council has taken you to court for rent arrears or anti-social behaviour.
