How we can help with homelessness

If you’re worried about losing your home, you don’t need to wait. We can help early by:

  • Listening to your situation
  • Giving you clear, tailored advice
  • Helping you understand your options and how to stay safe

You do not need to be sleeping on the streets before asking for help.

What we can and cannot offer

We will always try to prevent or relieve homelessness.

Many people think we must provide temporary accommodation to everyone who is homeless.

However the law decides when we can offer accommodation. This depends on whether, following an assessment, we have a reason to believe you have a priority need.

Priority need

Priority need is a complicated area. If you are single, have no children and have no additional vulnerabilities, you are unlikely to be eligible for temporary accommodation.

Priority need covers people who would be at greater risk if homeless, such as those with children or experiencing harm.

Even if you are in priority need, you will still need to look for accommodation. Temporary accommodation is short‑term and you will have to pay for it, so it does not replace the steps you need to take to secure a longer‑term home

If you are not in priority need

If you are not in priority need, we will still help you by:

  • Giving you clear advice on your options
  • Working with you on your housing action plan
  • Supporting you to take steps to secure accommodation
  • Exploring all available routes to help you stay safe

Our aim is to understand your situation early and support you to keep your current home or find your own place to live.
