Coronation grants for community organisations

The Mayor of Wandsworth is encouraging everyone to get together with their community and celebrate the coronation of King Charles III. 

To make it easier, the council is offering grants to voluntary and community organisations to run events and activities and it will be free to organise a street party.  

Local voluntary and community organisations, including residents' associations and faith groups, can apply to the King and Queen Consort’s Coronation Grant Fund for community celebrations over the bank holiday weekend of May 6-8. You must apply by March 19. 

Grants will be between £500 and £5000 and can be for standalone events or for those run as part of the Coronation Big Lunch on May 6, 7 and 8 or the Big Help Out on May 8. 

A priority will be to provide grants to groups organising events for people who may otherwise not be able to access street parties near where they live - for example because they are elderly, have a disability, or live in an area where traditional street-based parties might be difficult to deliver, like on some council estates. 

The Coronation Big Lunch will be calling on people to share food and fun together on May 6, 7 and 8  in a nationwide act of celebration and friendship. It can be anything from a cup of tea with a neighbour to a huge community party.

The Big Help Out on May 8 will highlight the positive impact volunteering has on communities. People are encouraged to try volunteering for themselves and join the work to support their local area to  create a lasting volunteering legacy from the Coronation Weekend. 

The King and Queen Consort’s Coronation Grant Fund will consider funding to help organisations develop and deliver their Big Help Out activities, including additional staffing costs, volunteer expenses and other costs. It is anticipated that most grants will be of around £1,000, with larger awards considered where there is significant participation, inclusivity and scale.

The Mayor of Wandsworth Jeremy Ambache said: “We’re keen to get as many applications as we can from all over our diverse communities so that all our residents have the opportunity to celebrate together. We’re especially keen to support community and voluntary groups organising events for groups of residents not  able to easily  access a street party otherwise.   

“We’re also encouraging people to think about (a) voluntary help schemes that could have a lasting positive impact on our communities long after the Coronation is over. Over the past few months I have visited so many local groups and communities and I know how strong and united we are. Let’s show the rest of London what Wandsworth can do!”
